FAQs About Volunteering in Turlock
The Turlock Unified School District (TUSD) allows vetted community volunteers to assist counselors with the social-emotional learning of students at all elementary school sites. Whilst Jessica’s House trains volunteers for grief support , the Turlock Chaplaincy equips Treehouse Club volunteers for trauma support.
You will receive an application process form that will explain all the steps in detail. Vetting includes a background check, fingerprinting, and a TB-test. You may gladly ask for an experienced Treehouse Club volunteer to assist you. The Chaplaincy pays for this vetting, the liability insurance, as well as the school supplies. No volunteer needs to pay from private sources.
The most important skills are attentive listening, a compassionate and empathic heart for children, and joy in serving kids with emotional needs. Prior teaching experience is valuable, but not necessary. You will be a TRUSTED adult for these kids, and they will enjoy your company and counsel.
You’ll be paired with an experienced volunteer and learn by doing. We use storytelling, art and talk as therapeutic communication means. You’ll learn to ask open-ended questions during book and art time, so kids can reveal what is on their hearts and minds. The principle is: Express, do not suppress! If you can let it out, you can work it out. You’ll learn to interpret their responses to understand their circumstances.
You will witness kids helping kids when they relate to someone’s circumstances and offer their insights. Kids experience Treehouse Club time as a SAFE place where they are free to talk what’s on their hearts and minds. They look forward to each session and are sad when you leave!
Volunteers use books, expressive art and other interactive activities to teach fragile students coping skills so they can become emotionally resilient and restored. These materials & the curriculum are supplied to you!
You may state your preferences, as well as the lead volunteer you might want to serve with.
